Here's a chicken-and-egg question: Which came first, Bryant or Peta? In other words, is the (thankfully) former AG a fifth columnist for the animal rights movement, or is he just a Useful Idiot?
"These dogs are a ticking time bomb," said Daphna Nachminovitch of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. "Rehabilitating fighting dogs is not in the cards. It's widely accepted that euthanasia is the most humane thing for them." -- USA Today Dec 21, 2007

One of my favourite tell-it-like-it-is bloggers, Luisa, posted a good article about the old '2000 psi' myth. I'm glad that little 'fact' continues to be debunked. You should read it. She's got a lot of good stuff over there including some great updates on the Vick pups - snoop around! Saturday, January 26

Well, I hate to say it but it's about time people clued in. In my opinion, buying a dog at a pet shop is no less risky than buying one at a fleamarket. I wouldn't do either. I'd rather pick up a stray on the street. I would adopt from a shelter or reputable rescue and I would get a pup or older dog from an established, ethical hobby breeder but buy a pig in a poke? No thanks, life is risky enough without increasing the chances for heartbreak. This story at City News has information about the rabies case which is of concern to Toronto's Public Health department. City did a great job with the article but what I especially liked was seeing the links at the bottom which contain information that will educate the public about dog ownership and how to go about getting a healthy pup. Hats off to City for not only reporting, but also informing the public about the subject. Let's hope they've started a trend!

Remember when we were having fun fisking the interview with David Spence and others on Wednesday? Remember when we said, "not so fast" about the wild premise that two loveable family pets had snapped and turned on their owner, killing her? KC Dog Blog has some updated information about that case you should read. And no, we're not sending you back and forth because we're playing a game with our readers :>) As usual, there's more to this story than has been widely reported. Most serious attacks and fatal maulings take place under sordid circumstances. From what KC Dog Blog has discovered, it sounds as though this one was no exception. Wednesday, January 23

UPDATE AT CTV Jan 25: http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20080124/Rabies_alert_080124/20080124/?hub=TorontoHome --- This is a horrid story. An infant pup purchased at a fleamarket at Hwy 27 and Dixon (near Toronto airport) died in its cage after the new owners dumped it at the Toronto Humane Society when they couldn't afford treatment. I wonder if this is the same fleamarket where Rambo (the dog on death row in Mississauga) was purchased? Millers from near Owen Sound sold the poor tyke to an obviously well screened home. Anyway, rabies has been virtually eradicated in domestic animals around here but the good old millers are keeping it alive. Here's the story from City TV, please pass it on. I sure hope they nail this miller because it can spread quickly. Pup plays with other animals, goes to dog park - you get the picture. Catch that miller and lock him up! And stop selling puppies at fleamarkets and in pet shops, will you?

Let's hope her countrymen heed her warning before it's too late. The bottom line, as Margaret points out, is whether or not you believe the government has the right (or the knowledge) to decide what kind of dog you should have, whether or not your dog should have invasive surgery, whether or not your dog's tail should be docked or any of the rest of it.

According to an interesting report, Alaska led the US in dog bite-related fatalities, with 9 deaths over the 11-year period of 1991 - 2002. That's an average of just under one fatality per year throughout the state. Eight of the nine deaths were Native Alaskans and more study is needed to find out why. I suspect that, as with some of our First Nations reserves, the dogs tend to run loose, form packs and entertain themselves, which, when combined with small children, can be dangerous. This news report is informative and non-hysterical. In other words, it's well worth reading.

The Knoxville Animal shelter held a session to teach people about 'pit bulls' - what's true and what isn't. It was sold out - I guess people really do want to learn the facts. Hats off to this program - apparently, they do this for many breeds and I think it's a great idea. Here's the news item.

This breeder's site has a great collection of old ads featuring Boxers. It's worth checking out if you're into that kind of thing. It's always interesting to see how breeds have changed over the years. Then there are ads like this one that take me back. Or maybe this one is better.

Everyone's favourite wannabe tough guy, amateur comedian and ultra 'pit bull' hater, dog-catcher Skeldon, has come up with some wacky new ideas he can't wait to share. Real news would be that Skeldon suggested something sane and workable which was based on facts, but what the heck, he's always good for a few laughs. I mean, he's no

Ohio representatives will meet tomorrow, January 9, to discuss revising State legislation to remove breed-based descriptions from the legal definition of a dangerous dog. Here's the story at the AKC website. If you live in Ohio, you know what to do. Here's hoping common sense prevails.

Yes, it is rather lazy to just link to someone else's material but it's Sunday, I've been hither and thither for the past few days and I can't improve on this great post over at Terrierman's place, so why try? Peter Worthington should read this column. It's about a breed of terrier that will fight anything in sight and is like a loaded gun, according to aficionados, especially in the wrong hands. One can only assume that the deliberate addition of SBT blood was an attempt to exert a calming influence on a game little never say die, Evel Knievel of a dog. |
