I'm so tired of seeing people walking their dogs around with improper muzzles.  It is infuriating to see dogs wearing those nylon muzzles, especially in the heat.  Please tell your friends, if they are using them, that nylon muzzles like these:

are intended for temporary, emergency use, such as at the vet's office or in case of accident where the dog may bite you when you try to administer first aid or move him/her.  They are not suitable for extended use.

Dogs lose heat through panting, through their ears and through their feet. They cannot sweat.   If  dogs' mouths are kept closed, as with these emergency muzzles, they cannot ventilate and cool their bodies properly.  They will suffer from heatstroke and could even die from it.

Even the Ontario Fiberals recognized this and stated that any muzzle must allow the dog to breathe, drink and pant.

Leather muzzles such as the one below are an excellent choice.  They are breathable, good quality leather, the ends are open to let air (and treats) pass through and they are not tight around the dog's mouth.:
